Description:
Event DetailsHornsey Library is very proud to present an exhibition celebrating the work of cartoonist Peter Till. From Peter:
I was born in Manchester in 1945. At 11, I went to what was called a Technical High School. It was for children they thought were better with their hands than their heads. However I pursued the, possibly quixotic, idea of getting to Cambridge. And succeeded!
When I finished my degree in English Literature, I came to London, joined a Pythonesque Revue Group (The Flies) and showed my thin folder of artworks to
Oz magazine and Time Out and they both published some drawings straight from my portfolio! Gradually the commissioned artwork became more regular (and lucrative!) and I became better known.
I made an animated film with the late lamented Ian Eames (The Beard) and formed a ‘cult band’ (i.e. nobody had heard of us). We made a widely unavailable record. I spent several months in New York working for various American newspapers and magazines (MS, Screw, New York Times, New Yorker). Back home I was being commissioned by many newspapers and magazines such as The Spectator, Radio Times, Prospect, New Scientist, The Listener, New Society, Evening Standard magazine, and by London Transport and the Royal Mail. (I’ve designed eight stamps). I had a regular spot in The Guardian for many years.
The V&A museum has recently taken some of my work for their archive. I am a patron of AOI (The Association of Illustrators) and a member of AGI (Alliance Graphique Internationale).
I am trying to reduce my enormous archive and raise some money for our local Allotment where I have a plot.
This is a don't-miss exhibition and a chance to own a piece of history!
