Red squirrels have lived in the UK for around 10 000 years. Grey squirrels were introduced in the UK by the Victorians in the 1800s. Since the introduction of the grey squirrels, the numbers of red squirrels have drastically reduced. Conservation efforts have succeeded in increasing their numbers in some areas in the UK.
