Windrush Day is observed on 22 June every year. On this day we honour the contributions of African-Caribbean migrants who arrived after World War 2, starting with the HMT Empire Windrush ship in 1948.
In honour of this day, we will be screening the TV mini-series, 'Small Island' rated 15, at Muswell Hill Library on Monday 22 June, from 2.30pm-5.24pm. This show is adapted from the book with the same title, by award winning author Andrea Levy.
The story follows Hortense Roberts, a Jamaican Woman who moves to London after World War 2 and Queenie Bligh, a working -class girl from Yorkshire who marries Bernard Bligh to escape her family's pig farming business. The show explores themes of racism, homesickness, and the challenges faced by Jamaican immigrants in post-war Britain, as they navigate their new lives and complexities of integration. The narrative intertwines the lives of these characters, highlighting their aspirations and the impact World War 2 on their lives.

Step into a world of indigo fabric, rhythmic stitching, and quiet joy at our Sashiko Workshop - an immersive experience inspired by the timeless Japanese tradition of Sashiko.
Sashiko, meaning "little stabs" transforms simple running stitches into mesmerising geometric patterns. As you trace classic motifs - waves, hempleaves, interlocking circles - you begin to see how repetition becomes art.
Sashiko is also more than embroidery, it's a moving meditation. The steady rhythm of stitching slows your breathing, softens your shoulders and the simple repetition quiets the mind, leaving space for calm, clarity and creative flow.
No experience required, just curiosity, whether you are a seasoned maker or picking up a needle for the first time, you will discover the quiet thrill of watching patterns emerge beneath your hands.
