Event DetailsScience inspired by nature...
Japan's bullet trains are very fast, but they also used to be very noisy, when moving out of tunnels. Eiji Nakatsu, an engineer(who was also a bird watcher) resolved the problem, after watching a kingfisher dive silently into a river. He modelled the train on the beak of a kingfisher, and today these trains are even faster and much quieter!
Using living organisms to solve design challenges is called Biomimicry.
Celebrate British science week with us by making your own bullet train and kingfisher. Have fun colouring, cutting and sticking them together and add feathers to your kingfisher!
