An illustrated talk exploring the long and murky history of why the Haringey / Harringay / Hornsey name has had so many spellings and continues to cause confusion today.
About the speaker:
Hugh Flouch, a member of the Hornsey Historical Society’s Publications Committee has been a prolific writer and is a published author on the history of Hornsey and Wood Green. A keen researcher into the less illuminated corners of the area’s history, he has been exploring the toponymical history of the area for twenty years.
If you enjoy singing, even if you don’t have any experience of being in a choir, London Youth Choirs (LYC) invites you, your parents/guardians, siblings, wider family and friends to join us for a FREE Family Come & Sing event in TOTTENHAM! The songs we will learn together are most suitable for children aged 6-11yrs old but younger siblings are welcome when they are accompanied by their grown-ups.
The workshop will be friendly and welcoming – no experience of singing is necessary! There will be warm-up activities, fun songs to try out and you’ll also get to meet other children from your area. If you enjoy the workshop and would like to join one of our LYC choirs, there will be information on the day on how to join and we will be in touch after the session and available if you have any questions. There will be a break with FREE soft drinks, fruit and biscuits.
The workshop is completely FREE OF CHARGE and you don’t need to bring anything special along with you.

Step into a world of indigo fabric, rhythmic stitching, and quiet joy at our Sashiko Workshop - an immersive experience inspired by the timeless Japanese tradition of Sashiko.
Sashiko, meaning "little stabs" transforms simple running stitches into mesmerising geometric patterns. As you trace classic motifs - waves, hempleaves, interlocking circles - you begin to see how repetition becomes art.
Sashiko is also more than embroidery, it's a moving meditation. The steady rhythm of stitching slows your breathing, softens your shoulders and the simple repetition quiets the mind, leaving space for calm, clarity and creative flow.
No experience required, just curiosity, whether you are a seasoned maker or picking up a needle for the first time, you will discover the quiet thrill of watching patterns emerge beneath your hands.
World Turtle Day is celebrated every year on 23rd of May to raise awareness about the conservation of turtles and tortoises worldwide. Celebrate this day with us at Muswell Hill Library by making your very own turtle! Have fun colouring it, cutting it out and sticking it together!
